Like anything, it depends on the person and situation. In this case, Pi had extremely strong will and the competition to survive. He was NOT going to be eaten by Richard Parker, and he couldn't kill the tiger, so he had to fight to remain alive. I thought it was really interesting when Pi ate the fish. Being a vegitarian his while life, killing the flying fish was an extremely traumatic experience. It really stresses the point of survival, though. If he is willing to leave all beliefs of the vegetarian lifestyle, than how far will people go to survive? I think they will go as far as their will takes them. If you want to survive, you'll find a way.
